Deep in the Rock River Canyon in Michigan, Rock River Falls quietly appears in the glacier-carved landscape, surrounded by dense forests and filled with layers of history. On this land of the Upper Peninsula, human footprints have been traced for thousands of years. After the indigenous Algonquin people, French and British explorers followed in the 19th century during the mining and logging boom, and Finnish, Swedish and French-Canadian immigrants settled here. Today, this sparsely populated area houses only 3% of Michigan's residents, and the forests and waterfalls still retain an almost pristine tranquility.
To reach the waterfall, you need to hike along a winding trail, lined with towering pines and cypresses, maple trees, and under the shade of ferns and wildflowers. Red squirrels scurry among them, white-tailed deer move quietly, and the calls of gulls and woodpeckers echo through Hiawatha National Forest. At the end of the trail, an 18-foot-tall waterfall cascades down into a pool of clear water. As the seasons change, the place shows different styles. In summer, the sun dances on the water. In autumn, the treetops are dyed into a gorgeous sea of fire. In winter, the rocks are covered with crystal ice crystals.
